Komatsu executive general manager — people & strategy Colin Shaw says the organisation is undertaking a huge recruitment drive, following on from the release of more than 25 new Tier-4 low emissions machinery in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.

“With the skilled workforce in Australia constantly diminishing, we are going to go on a campaign to supplement that and build the industry to make sure we’ve got a solid foundation for the future,” he says.

“Kids of today coming out of school don’t have the opportunities and I think TAFE is falling down in what it’s proposing and governments just aren’t doing enough. “So we as a company will lead the industry in how we can develop our people. “We are going to develop them into being capable of using the latest technology around these Teir-4 machines and shift them from being a simple mechanic into a really advanced mechanic and that will have a compounding effect on their ability and allow them to grow as people.”

“So the skilled workforce is primarily the area we are going to go into, we are going to have a campaign where we are going to go global and bring people into Australia first from the Komatsu global world and then from other industries.”

Komatsu will build its apprenticeship programs. It currently has over 120 apprentices in Australia, and will be putting on about another 70 this year.

“We are going to build more year-on-year,” Colin says.

“We have started our own Komatsu training academy and we will run all those apprentices through our new academy. “We will build customer relationships and build their apprentices into our training academy and make sure the industry has the skills needed for the future.

“So we want to take a really strong lead in this and go on a campaign building the future of Australia with Komatsu, so that we are in partnership and that we are one family in this industry. “We want to build a family around our products and a family around our people and what we do for our skilled workforce.”

Jobs included in the Komatsu recruitment drive include parts interpreter, site technician; fleet manager; workshop technician; parts planner; branch manager; service administrator; workshop supervisor; field service technician, FIFO field service HV electricians; field service auto electrician, electrician, field service HV electrician; customer support supervisor and FIFO field service technicians.
