Caterpillar has introduced the 548 and 548 LL forestry machines.

The Cat 548 forestry excavator is configured for forestry tasks ranging from road building and site preparation to roadside log processing. The 548 LL is configured as a log loader and can perform log handling tasks such as shovel logging, loading and millyard activities.
Both new machines are powered by a Cat 152kW C7.1 ACERT configured to Tier 4 Final emissions standards.
The hydraulic system has received an upgrade, with upsized pumps and back-to-back main control valve optimising fluid flow. The result is stronger and faster responses from work tools which in turn increases productivity and fuel economy.
The hydraulic update allows the 548 and 548 LL to run at a lower steady RPM while maximising power, resulting in significant fuel savings and lower operating costs.
Cat says there has also been an almost twenty per cent increase in swing torque over previous models, providing more power and giving the capacity to handle larger payloads with improved control.
Inside the cab, Cat says it has introduced features and tech aimed at reducing operator fatigue and improving productivity including an air suspension seat, heating and cooling, satellite radio, 12-volt charger and an LED monitor.
In terms of maintenance, the 548 and 548 LL have a one-piece engine hood design with two opening angles to allow easy access to the engine can cooling compartments. The side-by-side engine and hydraulic cooler are easy to clean, as the cooler hinges out of the way.
The 548 and 548 LL also have plentiful storage space at ground level allowing ready access to tools and equipment needed daily.
