BYDA unveils plan to reduce damage and disruption in utility industry

BYDA partners with industries involved in the delivery of essential services to keep construction workers and the community safe during excavation projects

Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) has unveiled its new five-year strategic plan with the aim of achieving zero damage and reducing harm and disruption in the utility industry. 

Over the next five years, BYDA will focus on five pillars of activity: asset information, advocacy and regulation, damage impact and investigation, establishing standards and industry leadership.  

BYDA says its new strategy marks a significant step towards a safer and more efficient construction industry in Australia.  

BYDA partners with industries involved in the delivery of essential services across Australia to keep construction workers and the community safe during excavation projects.  

The organisation’s new strategy outlines BYDA’s goals to achieve zero damage to member/utility infrastructure resulting from construction and ground-breaking activities; prevent community disruption; and protect people and property from harm.  

BYDA’s mission includes: 

  • Developing and promoting education and awareness to increase industry skills and setting industry standards to enhance capability 
  • Facilitating collaboration to identify improvement opportunities and increase standardisation 
  • Reporting on damage and its impacts, using data to drive education and change 
  • Advocating for nationally consistent best practices with government and regulatory bodies 
  • Developing technologies to make utility location information more accessible and efficient 
  • Promoting BYDA services to maximise impact
