Cat debuts electric D11 XE bulldozer

Launched in Las Vegas this month, the new Cat D11 XE bulldozer has an electric drive system that will help save fuel costs

The new Cat D11 XE bulldozer is the world’s largest, most powerful and efficient electric drive dozer with high drive

Caterpillar has debuted its new D11 XE at bulldozer MINExpo 2021 in Las Vegas, launching an electronic dozer it says offers a vision of the future.

The company says the new model offers a more efficient, productive, and sustainable electric option for the market, adding that it is the world’s largest and most powerful electric bulldozer with high drive.

The electric drive system delivers constant power to the ground for increased manoeuvrability and faster cycle times while costing operators up to 25 per cent less on fuel costs per bank cubic metre.

Improvements to the power output, as well as the machine’s increased durability, make it the lowest cost per ton operator in dozing applications.

Engine rebuild cycle times are up to 20 per cent longer when compared to other mechanical drive models. The dozer also boasts 60 per cent fewer moving parts which results in improved machine uptime availability.

Cat’s powertrain, electronics, software, and controls are all fitted as standard in the D11 XE for optimised performance while other changes have been made to help reduce component damage for improved reliability.

Updates to the electronic architecture mean the dozer can employ other Cat technologies such as MineStar Command, which offers both remote and semiautonomous dozing in the field.

A new modular design has also simplified maintenance of the D11 XE in addition to the lower number of moving parts, which help make servicing the machine easier while also lowering service costs.

When designing the dozer, Cat ensured components of the electric drive dozer were shared with the mechanical drive models, meaning service technicians will be more familiar when servicing and spare parts will be more readily available.

Cat says the D11 XE is currently in operation at the company’s dozer proving grounds in Peoria, Illinois, USA, before undergoing extensive field validation plans.

Following the tests, the D11 XE will enter full production.
