Cat revamps 816 landfill compactor

Improved airflow technology, a more comfortable cabin and a more efficient powertrain are features of Caterpillar's revamped 816 landfill compactor

The new Cat 816 landfill compactor is powered by a Cat 7.1 engine designed to maximise fuel economy while increasing power density with operators able to choose between two available engine packages

The 816’s engine packages are a US Tier 3 and EU Stage IIIA, or a US Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V model and are fit to meet local market emission standard requirements.

An improved shifting performance has been added in the revamped 816 model and can be attained through Cat’s Advanced Productivity Control System (APECS) transmission control, which achieves greater momentum on grades and lowers fuel consumption.

‘Paddle and Play’ wheel tips have been designed specifically for Cat compactors to deliver high compaction performance and traction while striker bars and available cleaner fingers aid in keeping the compactor’s wheels free from debris.

Like Cat’s 815 soil compactor, the 816 landfill compactor has seen a raft of improvements in the form of lower maintenance time and costs plus increases in operator productivity.

Improved airflow technology and a new radial air filter, which lasts four times longer than the previous filter (the 815 lasts three times longer than its predecessor) reduce cleaning and maintenance of the machine.

Cat says the heavy-duty main structures within the vehicle ‘are built to be rebuilt’ in a bid to lengthen the operator life of the machine and in doing so, provide significant long-term savings to machine’s owner given the continual rebuilding and reusing over time.

Sight gauges for the coolant, transmission oil and hydraulic system have been added and provide quick inspections without the risk of contamination. Hydraulic oil, cooler, fuel cooler and condenser service points have also been grouped to further minimise maintenance time.

Access to the emergency shutdown, battery disconnect and jump start functions are now able to be accessed quickly from ground level.

The cab of the 816 includes upgrades to Cat’s STIC system which allows for shorter, faster cycles to reduce operator fatigues while also increasing performance by combining steering, gear changes and other functions onto a single lever.

Additional machine controls include membrane switch panels, keyed ignition and electrohydraulic parking brake.

Similarly to the 815 model, flip-up armrests, a leather premium plus seat, two-way thigh adjustment, power lumbar and back bolster offer operators comfort inside the 816’s cab, whilst automatic climate control system and forced air conditioning ensure the cab remains at the operator’s preferred settings.

A 3G touchscreen displays Cat’ Vital Information Managements System (VIMS) including performance data to keep operators informed about the machine’s operating conditions.

Other data, such a machine location, hours, fuel consumption, idle time and diagnostic codes can be accessed through VisionLink – Cat’s online technological portal. Cat Compact is also included, providing in-cab guidance to operators through machine wear, compaction density and fuel consumption data.

The Cat 815 soil compactor is available now across Australia at local Cat dealerships.
