Cat upgrades mid-sized wheel loaders

Upgrades to two series of Cat wheel loaders have provided improved productivity and lower maintenance costs

Cat has upgraded its mid-sized 980 and 982 series wheel loaders including new technology, improved operator comfort and savings on maintenance.

The manufacturer claims the new models offer up to 10 per cent more productivity and 12 per cent lower maintenance costs compared to the existing 980M, 980L and 982M models.

Both upgraded loaders are now available for Australian customers.

The productivity boost comes from the new Cat Autodig with Auto Set Tyres which Cat says promotes proper loading technique and reduces both tyre slip and loading time, while also automating the bucket loading cycle to consistently fill more.

Another new feature is Application-Profiles, which allows an operator to set multiple machine paraments and optimise settings for the job by simply pressing one button.

Profiles can be customised to suit specific jobs, while a new controls layout has been designed to be more streamlined.

Available in either comfort, deluxe or premium options, the adjustable suspension seat can provide heating and cooling options, while there is also increased legroom and reduced sound and vibration for operators.

The 982 is fitted with a seat-mounted electrohydraulic joystick, while that feature is an optional extra on the 980 – which can also come with a conventional steering wheel.

In terms of specifications, both models offer 406hp (303kW) engines, however, the larger 982 loader has a higher breakout force of 262kN compared to 227kN on the 980.

The 982 also weighs more overall at 35,510kg compared to 30,344kg and has a larger bucket capacity and maximum lift height.

Cat says most maintenance intervals have been extended for the hydraulic system, reducing cost and downtime, while access to the important maintenance areas is easy.

Another optional extra on the 980 is Fusion Quick Coupler, which Cat says delivers quick bucket changes without the need to leave the cabin.
