Cat ups the ante with new 990K wheel loader

Caterpillar has replaced its 990H wheel loader with a new model offering more power, increased payload, improved safety and a better operator environment — the Cat 990K

Designed primarily as an optimum loading tool for Cat construction and mining trucks, specifically the 54-to-91-tonne 773, 775 and 777, the 990K’s payload has been boosted from 15 to 16 tonnes. This, the company says, makes the new loader a perfect four-pass match with the 775 truck, increasing efficiency and productivity.

Also providing an efficiency boost are the new, Performance Series buckets designed for fast filling and full bucket loads on every pass. They are available in sizes ranging from 8.6 to 10 cubic metres.

The 990K is powered by Cat’s C27 ACERT engine, which delivers an 11 percent power increase to 521kW (699 hp). Interestingly, this comes without any change in fuel consumption due to a lower engine speed, an ECO Mode (on-demand throttle), an engine-idle shutdown system and an engine-idle kickdown/auto-resume system.

Caterpillar says the 990K is available as a US EPA Tier 4 Final version and as a Tier 2 version for less regulated regions. “No regeneration or operator intervention is required for the NOx reduction system and diesel oxidation catalyst equipping the Tier 4 Final model,” the company says.

In addition, it adds, “the Cat exclusive, field-proven impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock-up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times, and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications.

“The system allows operators to balance rimpull and hydraulic power for optimum loading efficiency. Positive Flow Control implement hydraulics use a variable displacement, electronically controlled pump to precisely apportion oil flow based on operator control inputs.”

On the operator side, the new model’s cab has been redesigned for easier entry and exit, has a noise level of just 69.9 dB(A) and features a new seat — the Cat Comfort III — with integrated controls for smooth and comfortable operation. Transmission controls are integrated with the STIC steering lever.

Other features include: the Cat Vital Information Management System, VIMS 3G, which provides customisable operator profiles, a cycle timer and an integral Payload Control System; the Cat Vision rearview camera system and in-cab display; and the optional Cat Detect object detection system, which uses radar to ‘ping’ objects and notify the operator.

While the Cat 990K is designed primarily for loading the 775 truck, it can be tailored for other applications and sites.

For instance, the optional high lift linkage enables it to load Cat 777 trucks, and increased stability and larger lift and tilt cylinders provide the extra capacity required for steel mill and forestry applications.
