Caterpillar launches new 14 tonne excavator

Caterpillar says its new excavator, the 311F LRR is suitable for contractors looking for machines to operate in narrower sites.

A prominent feature of the 311F LRR is its reduced-radius that limits over-the side tail swing to just 20 inches, making it ideal for use in space-restricted areas.

Engine and Hydraulics

The machine is powered with a 70 net horsepower C3.4B engine that meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage IIIB, and Japan 2014 (Tier 4 Final) emissions standards; effectively helping the operator save on fuel costs.

An engine idle shutdown feature automatically stops the engine after a pre-set period of idling, and an ECO mode allows adjusting machine performance to the task at hand.

Caterpillar adds the C3.4 engine also accepts biodiesel blends up to B20, equating to more savings for the owner.

The 311F LRR’s hydraulic system is able to respond proportionately to control lever movements and delivers flow precisely where and when it is required, thus reducing pump loads and saving fuel. The system is capable of handling a wide variety of power tools for greater machine versatility.

Machine built

Caterpillar says the major structures for the 311F LRR has been designed for long term durability.

The upper frame incorporates special mountings to accommodate the heavy-duty cab and the standard long undercarriage uses high-tensile-strength steel components for a longer service life.

The reach boom and stick uses internal baffle plates for added strength and are ultra-sonically inspected to ensure weld quality.

A Cat Pin Grabber coupler on the new model allows a range of bucket sizes or attachments such as hydraulic hammers and shears to be switched quickly and safely.

In the cab, an automatic climate control system with multiple vents provide filtered air and seat choices include air suspension, heated and cooled options.

Joystick control consoles can be adjusted to suit operator’s preferences. The right hand controller incorporates a “one touch” button for reducing and resuming engine speed. An available “quick change” pattern changer allows operators to select the operating pattern of choice.

A crisp LED monitor can be programmed in 42 languages and displays critical operating information as well as images from the available rear-view camera.

The cab has ample glass area as well as a large skylight for enhanced visibility. The skylight also serves as an emergency exit.

Halogen lights installed on the machine provide ample illumination and can be programmed to stay on for up to 90 seconds after the engine shuts down.

Large service doors that latch securely when opened allow ground-level access to routine service points such as filters, fluid taps, and grease points.

A screen between the radiator and air conditioner condenser facilitates cleaning, and the ventilation filter is conveniently reached from outside the cab.

Cat Connect

The new 311F LRR is covered by Caterpillar’s Cat Connect service which links operators to their equipment and Cat reps across the country. The service helps operators monitor and maintain their equipment to ensure the machines are being used to their maximum potential.

An optional ProductLink system wirelessly connects owners to their equipment, providing access to valuable machine data such as location, hours, fuel consumption, idle time, events and diagnostic codes for analysis and reporting via the online VisionLink user interface.

The information gathered can then be used to assist with fact–based decision making to help increase efficiency and lower owning and operating costs.
