CCF QLD launches Young Leaders Committee

CCF QLD is facilitating a genuine generational leadership ‘handover’

We were incredibly proud to launch our Young Leaders Committee on Thursday, May 14, with an initial meet and greet session coupled with a policy discussion.

Our committee consists of seven highly qualified and exciting young people under the age of 35, who are paired with a CCF QLD board director.

The director is there to provide them with governance training, guidance and an opportunity to develop a two-way relationship to help these young leaders understand the day-to-day demands of leadership, while the young leaders help provide invaluable insight into the other levels of the industry to directors.

Our seven young leaders are from diverse parts of industry and from across Queensland, leaving them ideally placed to provide leadership with a full spectrum of views and perspectives to facilitate their career pathway within the civil industry.

The members are:

- Judy Green: sustainability advisor, Fulton Hogan

- Dan Hardy: principal consultant, Lionheart Recruitment

- Hellen Lu: site engineer, JF Hull Holdings

- Matthew Hikcling: operations manager, Pentacon

- Tim Dyball: construction manager, Fulton Hogan

- Ben Zerner: civil estimator, Black Cat Civil

- Matt Robertson: project engineer, HEH Civil

This exceptional group of young people all offer strong opinions on the potential CCF QLD Code of Ethics, as well as offering quality insight into the policy making process for CCF QLD.

I’m currently participating in a refresher course on Company Direction and business leadership with AICD, and through this was able to provide insightful questioning into how these discussions were framed.

This kind of innovative thinking, with genuine open discussions, are what will help shape civil now and into the future. As Generation X approaches retirement age, along with the increase of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce, these kinds of mentoring opportunities represent a genuine leadership “handover”.

It is worthwhile noting that this annual program will run for 12 months and be tied to our Awards for Excellence. The awards showcase the use of leading technologies, strong safety performance, effective environmental management and meaningful stakeholder engagement.

Each state and territory conducts its own Awards, with local winners progressing to the National Awards, providing Queensland projects and workers with the opportunity to be recognised on a national stage.

Highly regarded by industry, government and stakeholders, the Awards have set a benchmark for excellence for more than 25 years, celebrating the contractors and project teams who continue to raise standards across the industry. The participant in the program deemed to have made the greatest contribution will be the recipient of an award on the night celebrating their achievements. This will be a huge career boost for the successful individual.

This committee will be something that board members and participants alike benefit from in the years ahead, and we expect it to be a strong driver of excellence, innovation and growth. This committee will help ensure that CCF QLD is a forward-thinking, well-run organisation and we are so proud to be bringing it to life.
