Construction starts on Port of Port Hedland upgrade

The final stage of work for the Pilbara Ports Eastern Harbour Revetment Upgrade project will be delivered by MGN Civil

Works to strengthen port infrastructure are underway at Western Australia’s Port of Port Hedland, as part of the final stage of Pilbara Ports Eastern Harbour Revetment Upgrade project.

The project involves renewing degraded sections of the inner harbour revetment wall by installing new rock armour. This will protect the wharf structure from coastal erosion and increase cyclone resilience.

The final stage of the project covers sections of revetment from Berth 1 to Berth 3 and between Berth 3 and BHP’s Nelson Point Berth A, building on earlier works completed at Berth 3 and the Nelson Point Tug Haven.

An $8.6 million contract to complete the final stage of work was awarded to MGN Civil, which the WA government says has proven capability in delivering large scale marine and rock armour infrastructure projects.

Construction is expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

“Upgrading critical infrastructure like the Eastern Harbour Revetment ensures the Port of Port Hedland remains safe and resilient to extreme weather events,” WA ports and regional development minister Stephen Dawson says.

Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel adds the upgrade will deliver long-term protection for the coastline using durable materials designed to withstand future cyclones.
