Event: National Forestry Conference 2016

Australia’s private forest owners and forestry industry professionals will be gathering in Launceston in October for the biennial National Forestry Conference 2016.

Taking place at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston from October 23 to 26, the conference is run by the Australian Forest Growers (AFG) group and the theme this year is ‘making the right choice’.

Over 40 guest speakers will cover a range of topics at the convention, beginning with an opening keynote speech from University of Tasmania chair of environmental sustainability Professor Barry Brook.

“Professor Brook has a strong interest in the ecology and sustainable use of forests and can draw on an impressive experience base to provide conference delegates with a challenging perspective on how private forestry can meet society’s expectations for sustainable production,” AFG national president Dr Kevin Harding says.

“Other internationally recognized speakers, with broad expertise including forest management are University of Tasmania professor of environmental change biology David Bowman,” Harding says.

Aside from the keynote addresses there are a number of tours on offer, from the five-day pre-conference tour covering forestry properties from Hobart to Launceston — to the single-day and half-day tours of local properties in the Launceston area. The tours will demonstrate the latest in sustainability, timber processing, multi-purpose plantations and more.

The conference closes with a dinner, where the national Tree Farmer of the Year award will be presented, and a closing keynote address from Professor Ted Lefroy, director of the Centre for Environment at the University of Tasmania.
