The Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) announced the winners of the 2018 CCF National Earth Awards at a gala dinner in November, recognising excellence in civil construction projects across Australia

The finalists from 42 projects gathered in the Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra where the following winners were announced:

CCF-Awards
Piling & Civil Australia won its award for the Burrinjuck Towers foundation replacement project.

WINNER – PROJECT VALUE UP TO $2M

PILING & CIVIL AUSTRALIA (PCA)

Foundation Replacement, Burrinjuck Towers 125 &126, NSW

This project was the design and construct of an intricate layout of micropiles, including a bespoke connection to each tower leg.

Transmission Line 970 forms a 132kV link between the Burrinjuck and Yass substations that is owned and operated by TransGrid. The majority of the line was built with wooden pole structures connected with 25 steel lattice towers to the Burrinjuck substation. A project was undertaken by TransGrid to replace the old wooden pole structures and upgrade the existing steel lattice structures to enable the installation of an optical ground wire communications cable from Yass to Burrinjuck.

The goal of the project was to establish a reliable telecommunication link between Yass and Burrinjuck. Lattice towers T125 and T126 are the final two towers connecting the line to the Burrinjuck substation. They lie in a remote, mountainous and challenging geographic location.

A large 83m long culvert (1.8m x 3.6m holding 530KL) detention/storage unit was constructed under the road of Bickford Terrace near Tarlton Street intersection, designed to retain water during large weather events and then discharge to the beach.

Using a Guided Boring System over 220m of pipe was hydraulically jacked, in some areas 9m under ground level, to the precise line and level required. This trenchless installation method ensured Lucas TCS achieved on-grade accuracy whilst eliminating some of the difficulties associated with open cut excavation.

Diona Pty Ltd won for the design and construction of water and sewer infrastructure to service growth in Canterbury Town Centre, NSW

WINNER – PROJECT VALUE $5M TO $10M

Design & Construction of Water & Sewer Infrastructure to Service Growth in Canterbury Town Centre, NSW

Diona was engaged directly by Sydney Water to carry out the amplification and upgrade of the pump station in Hurlstone Park along with the design and construction of new pressure and gravity mains.

The amplification and upgrade of Sydney Water Pump Station SP0082 included a full mechanical and electrical fit out. The pump station has been fitted out with two new 90kW submersible pumps along with a complete replacement of pipework, valves, instrumentation and electrical switch-boards.

The upgrade works have also included bringing the pump station to a standard where it now meets all the current standards and specifications. A new permanent backup generator has also been installed as part of the works. These works will lead to an improved and more efficient utilities system with lower chances of an environmental impact in what is one of Sydney’s most important biodiversity corridors.

The Green Square Town Centre is located on a floodplain and was once a network of swamps, wetlands and creeks. A new 2km stormwater drain was needed to reduce hazardous flooding in and around the new town centre area, particularly in Joynton Avenue and on Botany Road, Zetland and enable further development. The micro-tunnelling and civil works sub-contract included running 550m of twin parallel lines and 964m of triple parallel lines over 4km of DN1800 micro-tunnelling using concrete jacking pipe.

Wyong Road & Pacific Highway Upgrade at Tuggerah, NSW

Seymour Whyte Constructions Pty Ltd was contracted by Roads and Maritime Services to upgrade the Pacific Highway and Wyong Road intersection at Tuggerah on NSW Central Coast. Wyong Road is the major road linking the Pacific Motorway with Wyong, Tuggerah, The Entrance and surrounding coastal suburbs.

The project was a complex infrastructure upgrade, which involved construction of a new 86m, four-span concrete bridge over the main northern rail line.

It also included embankment and pavement construction to facilitate an additional three new eastbound lanes, extending the existing pedestrian/cycle underpass as well as 2km of new shared cycle and footpath, new water main and electrical utilities, upgrading the existing roundabout at Wyong Road and the Pacific Highway.

WINNER – PROJECT VALUE GREATER THAN $75M

RIO TINTO / BECHTEL / JACOBS / MCCONNELL DOWELL

Amrun Chith Export Facility, QLD

Part of Rio Tinto’s new $2.6 billion Amrun bauxite project near Weipa in Far North Queensland, the Chith export facility project has revolutionised the design, fabrication and construction of wharf infrastructure through a collaborative approach between Rio Tinto, Bechtel, Jacobs and McConnell Dowell.

Designed by Jacobs and constructed in only six months by McConnell Dowell, Rio Tinto now has a state-of-the-art facility that was delivered safely, efficiently and with minimal environmental impact. The Chith Export Facility, comprising a 650m access jetty and 350m wharf, will serve as a berth for ships while in port once the bauxite mine becomes operational. The project reformed the design concept by moving away from a traditional stick-built design to a modularised facility, with the wharf split into seven jackets, incorporating berthing and mooring dolphins and six topside modules.
