Video walkaround: JCB JS220-LC excavator

Following on from his review of JCB’s new 22-tonne JS220-LC excavator, chief reviewer Ron Horner examines the ins and outs of the machine with JCB Construction Equipment Australia national excavator product manager Deon Cope.

The digger has a number of new and innovative features which Ron raved about in the review, including a high-tensile reinforced dipper and boom, a quick-hitch which exceeds any current or foreseeable Australian mine or safety specification, a remote LED light sensor located at the top end of the boom which indicates to the operator that the bucket is in safe and secure position for use, and a state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient engine made specifically for off-road work.

"One of the key changes is the engine," Cope says in the video. "This particular machine comes out with the EcoMax, which is our Tier 4 Interim engine. The key difference between our engines and others on the market is we’ve achieved Tier 4 Interim without the use of a diesel particulate filter. So there’s no added cost; no added maintenance."

The company has achieved this at the cylinder head instead of the more common exhaust end, Cope adds.
