  • Largest excavator ever seen in Vietnam

  • 776kW Cat ACERT diesel

  • 12 cubic metre bucket capacity

The excavator, also known as a hydraulic mining shovel, was delivered to mining group Vinacomin for use in the Deo Nai coal mine located in Quang Ninh province in the northeast of the country.

Vinacomin purchased the enormous digger – the company’s first hydraulic mining shovel – to replace a number of smaller rope-shovel style excavators. To ensure mine staff could operate the machine safely, extensive operator training was provided by Cat and Vietnam’s sole Cat dealer Phu Thai Cat.

The giant Cat is powered by a 778kW Cat ACERT engine configured to the equivalent of US Tier 2 emissions standards.

The standard bucket on the 6030B has a capacity of 12 cubic metres of material or around 22 tonnes. The arm and bucket can get down to a depth of 8.1m, with a forward digging reach of 15.9 metres and maximum digging height of 13.9 metres.

The 6020B’s undercarriage consists of tracks made from 45 track pads sitting on eight rollers each side, translating into a tractive force of 1183kN or a top speed of 2.4km/h.

Inside the fully ROPS/FOPS cab is a pneumatically cushioned and adjustable operator seat, as well as head- and arm-rests. Roof-to-floor windows give impressive visibility, Caterpillar says, and a 254mm colour touchscreen gives the operator critical machine information in real time.

Maintenance has been streamlined on the 6020B with a centralised service area that is accessible from ground level. Within the service area are quick couplings for replacing diesel fuel, engine oil, engine coolant, pump transmission gear oil and hydraulic oil.
