Video: Accidentally draining a lake

Everybody makes mistakes at work sometimes, but this harrowing story is one these workers will never forget

This video from the History Channel, uploaded by YouTube user Bird Plan, tells the story of the time drillers working for Texaco accidentally drilled a 14-inch hole into the bottom of Lake Peigneur in Louisiana.

Not the biggest problem you'd think, except they had drilled into an open salt mine beneath the lake creating a whirlpool that eventually drained all the water, their drilling rig and eleven barges.

An engineering nightmare for sure, but thanks to the quick thinking and well-rehearsed evacuation plans not a single life was lost that day.
