When your business is built on knocking things down, it’s important to ensure you’ve got the toughest and most reliable machines available, as well as the right team to back it all up.

Southern Cross Demolition (SCD) is based on the Gold Coast but performs demolition operations Australia-wide. The group is primarily focused on marine and bridge demolition, but will tackle virtually any demo job it can.

SCD has built a reputation for timely, economical and safe work and the group enjoys positive relationships with large corporate construction companies and government authorities.

"Most of the work we do is marine work," SCD CEO Rod McCracken says. "We do a lot of bridges and jetties. We also still do a lot of general demolition work – inducements, implosions, high-rise jobs where we put the machines on the roof and gradually work our way down to the base.

That kind of work requires highly skilled operators and powerful, reliable machinery with an extensive support network to ensure everything stays on track. SCD has established a solid working relationship with equipment dealer Porter Equipment and, after trialling other brands, the group settled on Hyundai excavators for its operation.

The company says its business involves the careful allocation of resources and equipment and logistical planning to make the jobs successful. SCD’s fleet of Hyundai equipment and relationship with Porter means it can count on having the right machines when needed with no surprises.

McCracken explains that one of the keys to the company’s success is getting the right machines for the job, and that bigger isn’t always better – especially if two smaller machines give the team more options than one large one.

"We’ve got eight Hyundai excavators," McCormack says. "The largest one is a 320 [R320LC-9] and we don’t like going above that. We’ve thought about going up to a 50-tonner or even an 80, but it’s not usually warranted.

"We can still do as much work with the 35-tonne units that we could with one large unit, but running two is more versatile."

McCormack adds that SCD hasn’t looked back since acquiring its Hyundai fleet.

"We’ve had other machinery brands, but we’ve really had a good run with Hyundai machines," McCracken says. "We really haven’t had any problems with them at all. They’re powerful, and they’ve been reliable all the way through.

"They’ve got all the operator comforts, and we find them quite economical on fuel too.

"We’ve had machines from the Dash 7 range up to Dash 9 now. We find the Dash 9s to be a far superior machine to the Dash 7. I find that they’re a really comfortable machine … I like operating them personally."

McCracken says SCD has a little 3.5-tonner that surprises them with the work that it does.

"We’ve had that now for four years working every day, eight hours a day, sometimes more, and we haven’t had any problems with it," he says.

"Where it’s very handy is moving things around in a tight situation. We’ve actually picked up over a tonne by pushing the material against the blade, then pushing it up against the wall and picking it up and walking the material out  – all with a little 3.5-tonner. That’s pretty astounding for a machine of that size.

"We’ve got a couple of those now. We liked the Hyundai so much we bought another one."

McCracken credits the Porter Equipment team for its responsiveness and commitment to after-sales service, saying the group has always gone the extra mile to ensure SCD has the right equipment.

He says the Porter Group backs up its products with excellent service workshops and, where necessary, can make site visits to assist with any issues along the way. Porter’s extensive parts service completes the package and means Hyundai is the group’s first choice when it comes to hard-working machines that produce results.

"They’ve been very, very good to us," McCracken says. "Especially the sales reps and the backup staff – they go right out of their way for us.

"They’ve delivered machines to us almost immediately with no delay. Even when getting one from overseas, they’ve given us an equivalent machine to use until the new one turns up."

On top of SCD’s Hyundai excavator fleet, the group has been looking at acquiring some wheel loaders to assist with crushing duties.
