Pugmills are instrumental in adding moisture, cement and other quarry materials together to provide a homogenous road base material for the main roads and infrastructure industries. The Precisionscreen Scorpion Pugmill is a very versatile machine that can be adapted to work with various applications for mixing.

Established in 1986, in Brisbane, Precisionscreen have been leading the way in the design and manufacture of mobile screening, washing, crushing and recycling equipment. The 30 years of experience in the industry has gone into the Scorpion Pugmill design.

The Scorpion Pugmill PLC+ is capable of producing up to 350 tonnes per hour (tph) and is capable of doing any main roads requirement. The standard machine is suitable for OMC road base jobs and is also capable of doing cement-stabilised applications (with the addition of a cement silo). Unlike other plants, the Scorpion pugmill has an elevated pug head that discharges the pugged material from a 3.5m height.

This feature avoids the issue of segregation on the belt and makes it easier to clean the main belt as the material is carried to the pug head dry. This benefit also allows trucks to be loaded directly from the pug head and the operator has full control of the material flow from the remote control start/stop action in his loader.

The aggressive pughead action ensures a homogeneous mix of materials. The programmable logic controller (PLC) enables the operator to select different product mixes at the touch of a button and the interface is easy to use, showing running tph and water/cement percentages. This feature improves road base grading consistency, providing customers with a superior material. The added blend bin with PLC allows us ease of operation and stringent control on quality, and modified road base blends for stabilisation projects

There is also the option to add another hopper to blend different road base products together. This can help add bottom end or plasticity to the road base at a controlled rate.

Queensland business, Precisionscreen, joined the Australian Made Campaign, becoming an AMCL licensee, with most of their Australian manufactured products now able to carry the famous Australian Made Australian Grown kangaroo logo. The Scorpion Pugmill is manufactured in Brisbane and is registered Australian Made. “We know our customers are looking for Australian Made machinery that is manufactured locally and keeps Australian workers in jobs. The Australian Made logo is highly recognisable and will help us stand out from the crowd,” Precisionscreen general manager Paul Kerr says.

“We work in a very competitive environment and our point of difference is that a range of our products are Australian Made, so it makes sense for us to leverage that fact by using the Australian Made logo.”

Australian Made chief executive Ian Harrison welcomed Precisionscreen as a licensee.

“Australia’s reputation for producing products and produce to high quality and safety standards is driving sales in Australia, but we’re also seeing a huge impact overseas – opportunities for exporters are booming,” Harrison says. “No doubt that’s what Precisionscreen is seeing for themselves with their ability to meet the needs of a diverse range of clients.

Harrison says the quality and safety standards for production in Australia are some of the most stringent in the world and are part of the reason Australian manufacturers have earned themselves such stellar reputations.
