Coastal shipping has become a very cost-effective option for large earthmoving equipment.

Many companies are choosing to move their over-dimensional cargo through coastal shipping now. It is not only more cost-effective than standard road transport it also has a comparatively lower environmental footprint.

Many international shipping lines have permits to ship coastal cargo between Australian ports and CMX Global Logistics specialises in using coastal shipping for its door-to-door transport movements.

CMX is an international and domestic transportation and logistics provider specialising in transport of heavy machinery and parts. While moving machinery remains the backbone of the business since it was established in 2008, the company has expanded its portfolio to be able to deliver any type of cargo anywhere.

"Coastal shipping has become a very cost-effective option for shipping containers and machinery, particularly larger earthmoving equipment used for civil infrastructure projects and the mining industry," CMX Global Logistics global projects manager Ilija Ivanisevic says.

Some shipping services provide roll-on, roll-off services for machinery that have large enough doors for the very big dump trucks, which makes it much more affordable to relocate equipment from one mine site to another around Australia."

CMX Global Logistics recently transported five CAT 789 dump trucks, each weighing 115 tonnes, from Mackay in Queensland to Western Australia on a part vessel charter.

The project included cleaning of the machines at North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP’s) new wash pad in Mackay, delivery and preparation of the machines from the wash pad to the vessel under hook, and loading the machines for transport. The transit time was 10 days port to port.

"It was cost-saving to ship the five dump trucks from Queensland to Western Australia than it would be to transport them via road," Ivanisevic says.

"With distances between ports of over 1000 km, coastal shipping becomes cost-effective against land transport for long distances between the east coast and west coast of Australia and vice versa."

"There are also environmental benefits of coastal shipping as sea transport produces lower quantities of greenhouse gases than land-based transport.

"Many machinery buyers and sellers are seeing these benefits and electing coastal shipping as their preferred mode of transport for over-dimensional cargo between long distances."
