A Hastings Deering customer has become the first Caterpillar user in Australia to take delivery of a near-zero-emissions Tier 4 Cat F series excavator.
The machine has been ordered by Sunshine Coast-based civil construction plant hire company Black Cat Civil. Formed in 2006, the group provides machinery solutions across the civil engineering, mining and construction industries.
Non-road diesel engines (like those found in excavators and loaders) have been subject to strict emissions standards in the US since 1996 and in Europe since 1997. Although there are standards for on-road diesel engines in Australia, no such requirement currently exists for non-road engines.
Black Cat Civil directors Brendan Flynn and Jai Tomlinson say technological innovation will not only play a primary role in shifting operational culture but also allow the civil construction industry to improve productivity and reduce both operating costs and its carbon footprint.
“We have been waiting for this type of machine for some years, it is pretty exciting for us so we wanted to take it on-board,” Tomlinson says.
“Tier 4 means not only are emissions reduced but so too is fuel so we not only have immediate savings but with the option of running bio-fuel in the future – we can expect even greater savings.”
Hastings Deering sales manager Brett Lenz says that although there was no legal requirement for non-road emissions standards, Hastings Deering wanted to provide the latest technology to its Australian customers.
“Globally, emissions changes have been driven by legislation,” he says.
“Like all manufacturers of diesel engines, Caterpillar is required to deliver engines that meet government emissions standards that have been phased-in throughout the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Union.”
“Hastings Deering has undertaken to introduce CAT Tier 4 Final solutions in our excavator product line outside of any legislative requirements, to not only lead the way in both clean air emissions and fluid costs, but to provide our customers with the latest integrated technological offerings.”
