Leading hydraulic hammer manufacturer Furukawa Rock Drill Co. has teamed up with the Technical University of Tokyo to produce the new FX-series Furukawa hammers

According to the company, the new hammers are able to break through almost any material whilst minimising stress to the excavator.
The collaboration has resulted in a redesign of the impact mechanisms to reduce transfer of vibration to the excavator. Together with the fully closed frame and soundproofing kit, the hammer has minimised both the noise and the impact involved in using hydraulic hammers.
HCEA Market Development Specialist John Peagram says while the lack of noise from the operation of the new hammers is impressive, it is their performance that makes them stand out.
“Just a short, sharp burst can break most materials. That’s the way the hammer is meant to be operated, so there is less stress on the excavator,” he says.
Peagram recently visited the Furukawa manufacturing facilities in Japan and was impressed by the level of quality control at the factories.
“There is rigorous quality control at every stage, including removing one in ten breakers from the production line and testing them virtually to destruction to ensure that they meet the high Furukawa standards,” he says.
The FX-series is also built for low maintenance, with a design that minimises the number of parts and therefore ensures that wear parts can be readily replaced.
“The mono-block design eliminates a separate cylinder, front head and through-bolts,” Peagram says.
“There is a large diameter piston and the cylinder liner is replaceable, while the front bushing can be replaced in the field.”
Peagram adds the current market trend is favouring smaller equipment, hence why Furukawa and HCEA have ensured they are selling products that suit their customers.
“The hammers have a valve for adjusting the oil pressure and gas pressure which allows the Fx series hammers to be matched to a wide range of mini excavators.”
HCEA is about to launch a customer care program for Furukawa owners that will involve field training in how to set up, operate and maintain a hammer for optimal results.
“We want to share the expertise of our staff to ensure customers can choose the best hammer for their application and get the most out of their equipment,” Peagram says.
“We’d be advising customers on choosing the right size hammer for the job, ensuring they’re using it correctly,” he adds.
“For example, it’s important to use the correct torque settings when reassembling a machine after replacing a moil, or the moil could operate off-centre.”
Furukawa supplies its hydraulic hammers with a spare moil, a gas recharge cylinder, a tool kit and a handbook with the correct settings and other information for maintaining the hammer.
