Grand Prix driver Carlos Sainz visits Komatsu

Carlos Sainz joins Komatsu in Sydney ahead of the Australian Grand Prix

Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix (March 6-8), Komatsu welcomed Atlassian Williams F1 Team to its Sydney facility, where driver Carlos Sainz engaged with employees and celebrated the ongoing partnership between the two organisations.

Komatsu is a global manufacturer and distributor that provides essential earthmoving equipment, technologies and services to the construction, mining, energy government and quarry industries. Established in 1921, the Japanese company is a leading manufacturer of heavy machinery in the world, with over a century of experience under its belt.

Komatsu and Atlassian Williams F1 Team reunited at the start of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship season, with Komatsu becoming the teams’ Principal Partner following an earlier technical partnership with the Williams team in the 1990s. 2026 signifies the third year of the current collaboration, which aims to create value together across the globe.

The visit of four-time Grand Prix winner Carlos Sainz to Fairfield marked Williams’ first visit to Komatsu’s Sydney facility. The British F1 team has previously visited Komatsu sites in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, making Sydney the fourth Australian city to host the partnership on behalf of the Japanese manufacturer.

Located in Western Sydney, Komatsu’s Fairfield location locally employs 400 staff, and is a central hub for sales and servicing.

Williams’ appearance onsite was another opportunity to highlight the importance of employee engagement – one of the key cornerstones of the partnership.

Sainz kicked off the day by having photos taken with a PC55 mini excavator – later leaving his mark by signing the machine.

The selection was no coincidence: the model number mirrors the Spaniard’s iconic racing number, 55.

Built in three countries and supplied to the Australian market exclusively from Japan, the PC55 has a strong global footprint. Of the over 28,000 units currently operating worldwide, nearly 2,000 are at work across Australia, underscoring the model’s proven reliability and international appeal.

After the pit stop with the mini excavator, Sainz headed to a Q&A session with over 300 employees and customers, giving them the opportunity to put their F1 questions to the driver.

Sainz then climbed into the cab to drive a Komatsu HD605 rigid dump truck, as excited employees and their families watched on, getting a rare opportunity to see the racing star swap the track for heavy machinery controls.

Following the conclusion of the wider group activities, six specially selected employees, alongside Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy (KWEA) member Finnley Snedden, had the opportunity for one-on-one time with Sainz. The Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy is a programme designed to nurture the next generation of engineering talent from around the world, and the Carlos Sainz event proved an excellent opportunity to welcome a member of the cohort to Fairfield. Selected through the STEM Racing initiative, Sneddon brought his model F1 car to the visit, exhibiting the engineering skills that helped him get selected for the programme.

Driver appearances are one of the many ways Komatsu brings the partnership to life for its employees and is one of the most meaningful to all those involved. These events have engaged over 25,000 employees in eight countries, bringing regions together to experience the company belief of “creating value together”.

“Welcoming Atlassian Williams F1 Team to Australia is always an honour for all of us here at Komatsu,” Komatsu Australia managing director Sean Taylor says.

“Carlos Sainz’ visit to Sydney is now the fourth we have hosted on our soil, and to do so in front of so many employees and their family members demonstrates how important the partnership is to our workforce.

“As just one of many Komatsu subsidiaries around the world, I think I can speak for all of us in that the collaboration between ourselves and Williams is a valued part of our business, so to be able to showcase that on a physical level is significant to us all.”

Carlos Sainz adds: “Coming back to a Komatsu facility was a great way to start the 2026 season.

“After my visit to Awazu last year, I saw the impact this partnership had on Komatsu employees, and it was really nice to see that again here in Australia.

“The collaboration between us at the team and Komatsu is special, and to continue that for another season is a good opportunity for everyone involved. Thank you to all the Komatsu employees for welcoming us so warmly once again!”
