Machine focus: Hyundai Robex 235 LCR-9 excavator

The Hyundai Robex 235 LCR-9 excavator is a 23.5-tonne model with a short tail swing radius of 1,680mm, making it ideal for handling small- to mid-size excavating projects, demolition, road and utility work in confined areas such as roadways and in urban areas

Hyundai’s 9 series excavators are engineered to maximise fuel efficiency, with features such as two-stage auto decel, an economy running mode and a six-in-line Cummins QSB6.7 engine that complies with EPA Tier3 and EU Stage III-A emissions standards.

The Quantum System B engine is capable of pumping out 151 horsepower (113kW) at 1,900 rpm, and features advanced electronic controls and a self-diagnosis system.

While on the subject of diagnostics, the Robex 235 LCR-9 excavator also features Hyundai’s proprietary remote management system Hi-mate, which provides operators and dealer service personnel remote access to service and diagnostic information on the machine.

It also allows customers to see the machine’s location and set work boundaries.

Hi-mate is one of the more important features of Hyundai’s 9 series excavators, according to customer Dean Pfeifer.

“This feature is key when talking to the people actually responsible for the profit analysis of a project,” Pfeifer says. “When decision makers truly understand how this system allows them to track the machine’s production levels, fuel levels, and other diagnostic information without the down time of a service call, they understand how that can help them make a job more profitable.”

The 235 LCR-9 has a hydraulic system designed to provide the operator with super-fine touch and improved controllability, Hyundai says.

Improved pump flow control reduces flow when controls are not being used to minimise fuel consumption, while improved spool valves in the control valve are engineered to provide more precise flow to each function with less effort.

“Features include arm-in and boom-down flow regeneration, improved control valve technology and innovative Auto Boom and Swing Priority for optimal performance in any application,” Hyundai says.

The Auto Boom and Swing Priority function automatically and continuously searches for the ideal hydraulic flow balance for the boom and swing motions of the machine. The advanced CAPO (Computer Aided Power Optimisation) system monitors the hydraulic system and adjusts its settings to maximize performance and productivity.

Operators can set their own preferences for boom or swing priority, power mode selection and optional work tools at the touch of a button.

The cabin gives the operator more space, a wide field of view and the ability to fully customise his or her work environment and operating preferences via a 7-inch colour LCD screen.

Creature comforts include a fully automatic, high-capacity air-conditioning system and a radio/USB player with remotely located controls and a hands-free phone feature.

The cabin itself is built using strong but slim tubing for better safety and improved visibility.

“Low-stress, high-strength steel is integrally welded to form a stronger, more durable upper and lower frame,” Hyundai says. Structural integrity was tested by way of FEM (Finite Elements Method) analysis and long-term durability tests.

The machine is also made tough overall, says Naish Nand of the Porter Group, distributors of Hyundai Construction Equipment machinery throughout Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region.

“Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) uses quality Australian iron ore to provide increase durability and longevity,” he says. “This produces steel with a structural integrity of 50kg/cm3, which is a higher tensile strength than any other OEM.”

Serviceablility is made easier via wide-opening compartments and ground-line access to filters, lube fittings, fuses and machine computer components.
