Master Builders call for Strong Building, Strong Economy

National building and construction peak body Master Builders Australia has announced the Strong Building Strong Economy policy campaign in the lead up to the Federal Election in September.

The campaign was launched to call for election policies that will boost confidence, economic growth and jobs within the construction industry.

This follows the acknowledgement by both major parties in the first week of 2013’s Election Campaign that the building and construction sector will play a pivotal role in the transition to a post resources boom economy.

Master Builders CEO Wilhelm Harnisch says the strength of Australia’s $100 billion building and construction industry is a bellwether for the health of the Australian economy.

“We are ready to do the heavy lifting but needs whichever party that wins government at this Federal Election to do its part by providing policies that are real road maps for reform and a commitment to see their implementation through,” he says.

“As Reserve Bank Governor Glenn Stevens highlighted and key building and construction finance data shows, the building industry needs the next Federal Government to deliver policy road maps to reform if a strong building sector can help ensure a strong economy.”

Strong Building Strong Economy is advocating for the Master Builders Association’s policy Reform Agenda which has been provided to parties contesting Federal Election 2013.

The campaign provides policy solutions to key issues affecting Australian’s cost of living such as housing affordability, investment in infrastructure; the tax system and the industrial relations system.

“Master Builders will judge their responses, their policies and promises by whether they are based on substance and are not merely slogans or empty promises,” Harnisch says.

“Strong Building Strong Economy speaks for the Master Builders Associations and their members, the thousands of building and construction industry businesses large and small across Australia, in calling for the next Federal Government to be elected with a mandate to implement policies which will strengthen the building industry and the economy.”
