Jamie Whincup’s V8 Supercar is a lot smaller and faster than the heavy equipment they work on, but the champ still found a lot of common ground when he addressed a group of Komatsu apprentices recently.

Defending drivers’ champion Whincup, who drives a Holden Commodore VF in the Komatsu-sponsored Red Bull Racing Australia team, spoke on the importance of teamwork when he addressed the 25 apprentices at the company’s facility in Welshpool, Perth, ahead of the Perth 400.

"V8 Supercar racing is not a single-person sport," Whincup says. "Without the rest of my team at Red Bull Racing Australia, I wouldn't be able to succeed — so it's great to be able to demonstrate the benefits of teamwork to the apprentices."

Whincup, also known as ‘J-Dub’, focussed on the cross-over skills of problem solving, communication and working under pressure, and challenged the apprentices to set professional and personal goals for the year.

For the record, Whincup finished fourth in the May 18 race, behind Ford Pepsi Max Crew’s Chaz Mostert (Ford Falcon FG), fellow Red Bull driver Craig Lowndes (Holden Commodore VF) and Mostert’s teammate Mark Winterbottom (also a Falcon FG). He currently stands at No.4 in the drivers’ championship, behind Winterbottom, Lowndes and Lockwood Racing’s Fabian Coulthard (Commodore VF).

"We put high expectations on ourselves at Red Bull Racing Australia and we haven’t quite lived up to them at this stage," Whincup said before the race.

Komatsu Australia has been involved in the team sponsorship since 2008 when it became a premier partner of the Triple Eight Engineering V8 Supercars team (now Red Bull Racing Australia).
