Jason Nucifora was presented with an award for the Best Overall Student in Stage 1 of his apprenticeship and is now a fully qualified field service technician who does repairs and maintenance on Takeuchi, New Holland, Fiori and Toro machinery — including excavators.

Semco Queanbeyan manager Mark Skimmings says many customers comment on Jason’s skills and helpful attitude.

"He is a great asset to the company and a credit to the Queanbeyan branch," Skimmings says. "Apprentices are the future of the industry and their development was necessary to minimise the impact of a skills shortage.

"Apprenticeships represent our contribution to training a new generation of mechanics for the industry, with the company training five apprentices over the last 10 years, and most have been very successful in their careers."

Semco apprentices are exposed to all facets of the business and taught how to service, repair and maintain a wide range of equipment brands.

"The better apprentices become better mechanics who go on to become field servicemen – an important role in this industry," Skimmings says.

"Evolution of the industry means that diagnostic tools may not be a spanner and tool kit, but often a laptop computer, so our technicians need to know how to use the latest technology to diagnose service problems."

He says many go on to become industry executives, or end up in sales, customer service or parts and service management.
