Diesel, Dirt & Turf Expo 2017 highlights part two

There were so many shiny new machines at Diesel, Dirt & Turf 2017 at Panthers Penrith that Earthmovers & Excavators’ Brad Lockyer needed more than one day to even see them all, let alone write about them. Here’s part two of his highlights package.

Komatsu PC210LCi-10 excavator

Komatsu PC210LCi-10 excavators

Komatsu had its full complement of machines on show at DDT, but the PC210LCi-10 was the centrepiece of the big yellow display. After a successful launch into Komatsu’s dozer range, the PC210LCi-10 is the first excavator to fully incorporate Komatsu’s ‘intelligent machine control’ automation system.

The iMC system controls boom arm, and bucket movements according to pre-set design data from the excavator’s integrated GNSS receiver and inertial measurement unit (IMU+).

The system ensures a quality finish and minimal rework regardless of operator experience level, and can even be paired with an optional drone to instantly map out an area and begin precise excavation.

The 23-tonne excavator is driven by a 123kW Tier 4 interim diesel delivering over 15 tonnes of breakout force at the bucket.

Rhino adjustable bucket

Rhino Buckets GP Bucket

Aussie speciality attachment makers Rhino Buckets & Attachments had its latest GP Bucket at DDT, shining in a resplendent black with brass trimmings, featuring Rhino’s patented adjustable pin system.

The adjustable system allows the Rhino buckets to be compatible with just about any OEM machinery supplier, allowing companies to diversify their business and reduce stock.

The ability to adjust the pickup pins is achieved via Rhino’s unique modifiable bush and spacer system, as well as the ‘eccentric bush’ which can be easily rotated onsite to accommodate different pin centres.

Kanga PW628 loader

Kanga Loaders PW628

Kanga Loaders is a real Aussie success story. Founded 34 years ago, the company has pioneered the idea of a ‘business on a trailer’ — packaging its robust mini-loaders with a work trailer and allowing operators to start earning money immediately.

Kanga’s stand at DDT was awash with green and gold and there was a range of the distinctive Kanga stand-on loaders, including a PW628 loaded on a Kanga trailer.

The PW628 forms part of Kanga’s ‘midi’ range of loaders and uses a wheeled design with a 16.5kW Honda GX690 petrol engine. With a lift capacity of 250kg, the PW628 is suited to general contract work or in a rental yard.

Bobcat loader with Trimble antennas

Trimble GCS900 for Bobcat graders

Machine control specialists Trimble had a prime lawn position at DDT with plenty of foot traffic and had the latest GCS900 grade control system set up on a Bobcat grader attached to a T770 compact track loader.

The GCS900 system allows small contractors to work faster and more effectively on more complex projects requiring digital designs and 3D machine control. Two GNSS antennas are bolted to the blade, delivering highly accurate location data to the machine.

The GSC900 system can also be linked to Trimble’s Connected Site network, meaning digital plans and data can be transferred directly to and from the grade control system.

MD-S18 screening bucket

MB-S18 crusher bucket

The Boss Buckets display just kept drawing our eyes with its collection of massive attachments. Apart from the giant OSA demolition shear featured previously, Boss also had a big MB-S18 screening bucket on hand at DDT.

Suited to excavators in the 20 to 35 tonne range, the MB-S18 features a conical-shaped drum design that Boss says significantly increases the hourly production rate and screens all collected material without residue build-up.

The bucket’s baskets are constructed from interchangeable modular panels which are available in different hole sizes to suit different materials. The bucket is also equipped with a front pin that absorbs stresses created by large materials, which also increases the overall load capacity of the bucket.

Wacker Neuson 14504 excavator

Wacker Neuson 14504 compact excavator

Wacker Neuson is calling this model a compact excavator, but don’t be fooled into thinking the 14504 excavator is just a teaspoon for digging in the garden. The 17-tonne 14504 is powered by a 75kW Deutz 4-cylinder turbo diesel and delivers up to 91kN of breakout force.

Wacker Neuson says the 14504 is a machine that can deliver a high tonnage with the compact dimensions demanded by today’s cramped urban construction sites.

The excavator’s engine has been mounted at the rear, and the hydraulic control has been side-mounted in order to reduce the machine’s footprint as well as increase visibility.
