The movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Michael Bay, is the fifth instalment of Bay’s Transformers series and opened in Australian cinemas June 22.

The Cat excavator appears among vehicles hiding in Cade Yeager’s (Wahlberg) auto salvage yard along with a group of Autobots.

Cat representatives commented on the shared attributes between Caterpillar and the Transformers franchise.

"The attributes associated with the Transformers movie franchise – strength, loyalty and protection – line up perfectly with the Caterpillar brand," Cat global marketing manager Jessica Nunley says.

"The Autobots take on the role of partners who help the movie’s hero rise to the challenge, and Caterpillar views our customer partnerships the same way.

"As we develop new products for the jobsite of the future, we’re all about transformation. We want to help our customers change the construction industry for the better," Nunley says.

The excavator is certainly not the first Cat machine to appear in the movies, with the company’s Hollywood history stretching right back to the era of silent films.

In 1927 a Holt Caterpillar tractor starred in the silent film ‘Man Power’ and heroically saved a town from an impending dam breach. Cat machines have made cameos in many major movies since, starring alongside John Wayne in the 1968 film ‘Hellfighters’ and with Daniel Craig in the 2012 James bond film ‘Skyfall’.
