John Holland will help improve community safety and create more than 900 jobs with the construction of the Chisholm Road Prison project – Victoria’s new maximum-security prison.

John Holland CEO Joe Barr says the new maximum-security prison presented an opportunity to boost jobs in the Greater Geelong region during construction and ensure the prison system is safe, secure and well equipped to meet demand.

“I am proud to announce our Victorian Building team has once again impressed our customers with their dedication to delivering state of the art correctional facilities,” Barr says.

“We look forward to working with local communities and contractors to build a facility that keeps Victorians safe, and offers offenders the best chance at rehabilitation.”

The new facility will accommodate 1,248 prisoners and is being built in the vicinity of the existing prison precinct, which includes Barwon Prison and Marngoneet Correctional Centre.

The project will also include health, education and recreational facilities.

John Holland Executive General Manager, Building, David Lehmann says the team’s experience in delivering the award-winning Ravenhall Correctional Centre would be leveraged to deliver the project.

“Our people are our biggest asset, and we’ll be drawing on their expertise in successfully delivering high-quality, safe, and functional correctional facilities to get the best results for Victorians on this latest project,” Lehmann says.

In addition to the creation of more than 650 ongoing jobs, the project will support thousands of indirect and direct jobs across the steel, manufacturing, and construction sectors. It is estimated to create more than $173 million in economic benefit to the Greater Geelong Region during construction.

The facility is set to open in 2022.
