Victoria, Australia, five Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) crawler excavators are working hard to boost productivity for family-owned earthmoving company RAF Civil.

RAF Civil has put the Volvo CE excavators to work on several major jobsites in the region. These include large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the road upgrading work at Plenty Road and on the construction of a series of tunnels for the local Metro rail system. These projects will benefit thousands of local residents in the state of Victoria when they are completed in 2021. In addition to these projects, the excavators are tackling a wide variety of work, from drainage duties to rehabilitation and rock beaching work.

As a small business handling large projects, RAF Civil owner Adrian Forde says that purchasing quality construction equipment is one of the key factors of the company’s success.

"Supervisors and superintendents ask you what gear you have — especially if they don’t know you," he says. "They don’t want just a digger or just a breaker — they want a good one that can get the job done and get it done as quick as possible — without the downtime. There are cheaper attachments and cheaper diggers out there, but you get what you pay for at the end of the day."

Powerful and compact

RAF Civil’s fleet includes an ECR58D, two ECR88Ds, an ECR145C and an ECR235E. In particular, the purchase of the 25-ton ECR235E was a strategic buy to increase the company’s capabilities in dealing with larger and more challenging projects.

The ECR235E is powered by a Stage V engine and hydraulic system in a very compact body. Coupled with a short swing radius of 1.8 m, the machine can provide maximum power, productivity and uptime even in confined spaces such as tunnels and drains.

"We saw demand for bigger gear, especially doing drainage, deeper trenching and stuff like that — but still trying to keep within a reduced radius," Forde says. "Buying the ECR235E was the next step to keep moving the business forward and keeping the customers happy."

The Volvo ECR235E is powered by a Volvo engine with a 129 kW power rating.
The ECR235E is also built for comfort, featuring the newly designed ROPS-certified cab with improved all-round visibility, more space and ergonomic controls. RAF Civil purchased its excavators from CJD Equipment, the exclusive Australian distributor for Volvo CE.

RAF Civil is a locally owned and operated earthmoving company based in Kurunjang, Victoria. The company provides a range of services such as bulk earthworks, wet hire trenching, pool landscaping and site clean-ups to customers along Melbourne’s western suburbs including Werribee, Sunbury, Greendale and Geelong
