Sustainable infrastructure and energy provider Acciona was named employer of the year at South Australia's Civil Contractors Federation awards night on Friday February 12.

The night was a double celebration for Acciona, with the company's Ross Ecclestone also winning the manager of the year award.

The industry and training awards ceremony, which had been delayed from last year due to COVID-19, aims to recognise the performance of both newcomers and long-term contributors to the civil construction sector.

BMD Constructions had a very successful night, winning the 'pride in diversity and social inclusion' award in addition to the company's Darren Norton winning the quiet achiever award and Kane Cross taking out the 'best training to employment outcomes' prize.

Clinton Sands trainee Arlo Glazbrook was another to claim multiple prizes, winning the Harry Wauer Award for most outstanding civil construction trainee and also being named the Certificate III Civil Construction (Surface Extraction) trainee of the year.

Industry veteran Tony Baulderstone was inducted into the Federation's hall of fame while Alison Paley from Coleman Rail won the women in civil award.

Three President's lifetime achievement awards were also given out, recognising Bardavcol (corporate), Ted Paluszek (individual) and Boral Construction Materials (associate member).

Civil Contractors Federation (SA) chief executive Rebecca Pickering says the awards aimed to recognise excellence in a sector that was important to the state's economy.

"One of the Federation’s key aims is to work to help build South Australia’s economy through providing practical policies that encourage and support civil construction businesses in the State and ensuring we have the right skills pool to deliver on that," she says.

"South Australia’s economy and lifestyle cannot exist fully without the work of our members and industry.

"The awards therefore are an important contributor to recognising and acknowledging the outperformance of so many of our participants, both young and old, and particularly, ensuring inclusion opportunities for youth, women and indigenous communities to establish a more measurable foothold in this highly active sector," Pickering adds.
