Komatsu celebrates 100 years

Earthmoving heavyweights Komatsu will raise the bat in 2021 as the Japanese manufacturer celebrates its 100th anniversary.

A Komatsu wheel loader gets to work for Tasmania’s Central Highlands Council, one of the largest in the state.

Komatsu’s centennial celebrations will take place on May 13 – the same date the company was founded by Meitaro Takeuchi back in 1921.

To celebrate the milestone, Komatsu has unveiled a new mission statement and brand promise, as well as planning a series of activities across the year ahead which centre on the new brand promise of ‘creating value together’.

In its entirety, Komatsu’s new promise reads: ‘Creating value through manufacturing and technology innovation to empower a sustainable future where people, businesses and our planet thrive together.’

The four key values: ambition, perseverance, collaboration and authenticity aim to honour the company’s legacy while also focusing on the transformations of industrial, mechanical and agricultural industries through the age of digital disruption.

Komatsu says that “by helping to digitalise jobsites worldwide, our customers can optimise on-site operations towards a carbon-neutral environment.”

Founded in 1921 in the same city it was named after, Komatsu City, in Japan, the heavy machinery and earthmoving manufacturers first serviced the local region following the closure of a nearby copper mine.

Soon after however, the business transformed into the world’s second largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, after Caterpillar.

Moving forward, Komatsu aims to continue an active role in local communities across the globe and will focus specifically on sustainability.

Komatsu attributes its 100 years to its principles of ‘quality technology and manufacturing innovation, global reach and people development’.
