A Liebherr mobile crane was imperative in dismantling a weir in ‘challenging conditions’ Victoria’s west earlier this year

Advanced Cranes’ LTM 1450-8.1 dismantled the 60 year old Maffra Weir on Macalister River in Victoria

The Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 was the first crane of its type in Victoria and dismantled the weir in Maffra – a township 200km east of Melbourne – in what was described as challenging conditions given the restricted set-up area provided for the crane.

The 450-tonne, eight-axle LTM 1450-8.1 crane was provided by Advanced Cranes, having joined its fleet in 2020.

To dismantle the 60-year-old structure on the Maffra River, the area given for the crane set-up and position was constricted and meant the LTM 1450-8.1 had to be positioned in a way where it could complete the hoisting process over the side while remaining within the required working radius.

Core holes were drilled into the 30 tonne sections of the reinforced concrete bridge to secure the attachment chains before the hoist was completed

Uneven terrain and a steep slope, as well as an underground water tunnel, made locating a suitable crane position difficult for the team. However, by using additional crane mates, the LTM 1450-8.1 was able to be positioned by Advanced Cranes.

Advanced Cranes set up the LTM 1450-8.1 with a 28m luffing lattice jib and total ballast of 134 tonnes for the job. Two core holes also had to be drilled into the bridge before commencement, where attachment chains were threaded and then connected via a spreader bar.

The existing gate was dismantled before the weir and reinforced bridge was disassembled. Liebherr says the heaviest load for the crane was 32 tonnes, in addition to the four tonnes of rigging and hook, with a 34m radius.

The job was completed using Liebherr’s VarioBallast system, which varies the ballast radius using a hydraulic slewing mechanism. At its maximum radius, the lifting capacity is also increased to its maximum and can be reduced where required in constricted conditions.

Advanced Cranes managing director, Adam Tuddenham says the LTM 1450-8.1 crane performed well during the dismantling of the weir.

"Our LTM 1450-8.1 was the first crane of this type delivered to Victoria," says Tuddenham.

"Today it is still the only crane of this type in the state of Victoria and is delivering reliable, valuable services for us."

Constricted conditions, gradients and an underground water tunnel made the search for a set-up position for the LTM 1450-8.1 difficult
