Makin Traks is like family for IMC Earthworks

Honesty and providing quality material has kept the team at IMC Earthworks coming back to Makin Traks for its quality second hand dozers

A lot of hard work has gone into building the business of IMC Earthworks, and Makin Traks has been with them every step of the way.

Based in Moruya, on the southern coast of New South Wales, the IMC Earthworks team performs earthworks around the Eurobodalla region – using a fleet of graders, dozers, excavators, small plant and road construction machines to do so.

The company is owned and run by husband-and-wife team Izaac and Melissa Colbourn, both of whom come from third generation farming and earthworks companies, with ample experience in civil construction and project management.

Melissa recalls that when the company was starting out about 12 years ago, one of their first moves was to scour the classified ads, looking for a second-hand dozer.

They ultimately went with a Cat D3 dozer – bought from upgraded second hand dozer dealer Daz Scale, in the days when he was based in Melbourne.

“I think originally we found him from his advertisement – but we obviously went down and met him and had a look at the machine,” Melissa says.

The D3 met the company’s needs for a long time – carrying out works building roads, preparing building sites and working on farms and in agriculture.

“It wouldn’t have been until nine years later that we bought another one – because we were just starting off,” Melissa remembers.

“So we rang him back up and said oh, we need something a bit bigger – and that was it. He treats us like we are family now!”

Like so many businesses in southern NSW, IMC Earthworks were impacted by the bushfires of 2019 and 2020 – working tirelessly to carve out buffer zones around towns and helping to protect other private properties from damage and destruction.

“We were also doing lots of bushfire recovery stuff, fixing all roads up that have been burned out and cleaned up, like slashing all the verges from all the weeds and that that has come up,” Melissa says.

“As we the fires came, we started getting a lot busier – we started upgrading machines, and I think we’re on our sixth dozer that we’ve bought from Makin Traks – plus a grader.”

Today, Scale runs his quality second hand earthmoving business Makin Traks from Yandina in the Sunshine Coast – importing used dozers en masse and preparing them for sale to Australian buyers.

Scale, who specialises in Cat dozers ranging from D3 to D6, takes care to perform a series of checks on all units he imports – all of which come from official Cat dealers in the USA.

The company has also recently found itself providing several dozers to Australia’s National Parks and Wildlife Service, which manages more than 860 national parks and reserves around Australia.

Funnily enough, the team at IMC Earthworks was at work at a National Park outside Narooma where we were able to take some photographs of a new second-hand Cat D6K dozer supplied by Makin Traks.

Melissa says IMC Earthworks has been busy of late, building dams and doing a series of repairs to roads in National Parks – adding that all equipment working in these areas must meet a series of standards.

“National parks are really strict on what the gear is, and it has to be sort of newer model stuff and in pretty good condition,” she says.

“All the gear from Makin Traks always comes set up and just ready to just get straight off the truck and straight to work… we never have to do anything to get them ready – they’re just ready to roll out.”

“Every machine we bought, we’ve always gone into put tree pushers and rippers and stuff like that… he’s always been really good. As soon as we say what we need, he’ll chuck the tree pusher on and give us a good price on it.”

“It’s good to have somebody that you can rely on what he says – you can trust what he’s saying,” she adds.

“Every time he’s said something, it’s been the truth – so he’s always been very honest like that.”
