Video: Menzi Muck excavator on a crazy slope

Working on a slope is never the easiest thing in the world; working on slopes of up to 60 degrees in the Swiss Alps is another thing altogether, and calls for specialist equipment like this Menzi Muck M535 spider excavator.

In this video you can see operator Hugo Schranz and his crew laying a pipe up to a mountain station on the 2,190m-high Stockhorn mountain in the Bernese Oberland.

The Menzi Muck ‘walking excavators’ are based on a high-tech adjustable chassis with wheels and claws on hydraulically operated articulated legs that allow the machine to adapt to any terrain.

The Swiss company says that the excavator produces lifting and ripping forces beyond those of conventional excavators — a Menzi Muck weighing 9.5 tonnes produces an output similar to that of a 20-tonne tracked excavator.
