Michelin expands range for world’s largest ADT

Michelin has announced that its Xtra Defend tyre range has been expanded with a new size

Michelin has released its Xtra Defend tyre in a new size: 33.25 R 29. It will replace the X-Super Terrain + tyre in 800/80 R 29 as of December 2023.

The new tyre has been developed specially to fit the 55-tonne Volvo A60H, the largest articulated dump truck in the world. It is mainly used for mine and quarry applications.

This new size expands the Xtra Defend range, which now includes four references for the 80 series (23.5 R 25, 26.5 R 25, 29.5 R 25, and 33.25 R 29) and two references for the 65 series (750/65 R 25 and 875/65 R29). These tyres are intended for both the OEM and replacement markets and have been developed to be retreadable.

Michelin says the tyre’s design allows for better resistance against rough conditions with a minimum 24.7 per cent greater metal mass, a reinforced casing and plies, and sidewalls that are 15 per cent thicker. Michelin says the natural rubber used in the design of the Xtra Defend 33.25 R 29 offers reduced heat emissions.

“Michelin Xtra Defend is designed to meet productivity levels ranging up to a maximum of 385 metric tonnes per kilometre per hour on intensive cycles,” Michelin product category manager Laurent Greppi says.

“The protection level is optimised with a tread depth of 69mm and a reinforced steel crown belt package in order to ensure mobility and long life on all surface types, such as hard stones, very abrasive surfaces and even muddy soil.”
