NAWIC’s campaign highlights the importance of leadership opportunities for women to encourage recruitment and retention in the construction industry
As part of our ongoing advocacy priorities, NAWIC recently conducted research into the top 20 construction companies in Australia and it showed that, on average, less than 20 per cent of the leaders in these companies are women.
We know this is an issue that companies are aware of and working to improve on, through targeted programs and opportunities.
Our Women in Leadership campaign will examine the barriers to women moving into leadership and highlight both the women leaders currently working in construction and the programs that are working to provide women with the skills and opportunities they need to move into leadership roles.
Opportunities for women to move into leadership roles are a key part of encouraging women to enter the construction industry and to retain the women already working there.
We hear from our members that they do not always feel there is a place for them in leadership in the organisations they work in, and NAWIC wants to create a solutions framework to distribute to our corporate members and small businesses that highlights how we can work together to improve outcomes.
In July, we asked the CEOs and managing directors of the top 20 construction companies what actions they are taking to move women into leadership roles and what programs and initiatives they have in place.
We are excited to have received many responses and look forward to platforming them in September via our social media channels.

The National Association of Women in Construction is a peak membership body for women working in the construction industry.
NAWIC members are strong advocates for gender equity within the workplace, and support driving the changes that will aid in the increased recruitment, retention, and further vocational development of women within all facets of the construction industry.
