Porter Group: Hyundai HX500L a firm favourite at BMI Group

BMI Group recently welcomed a new Hyundai HX500L 50-tonne excavator to one of its waste recycling sites south of Brisbane, where its operator comfort and fuel efficiency have been a standout for the quarry team

The newest addition to BMI Resource Recovery’s fleet is a HX500L excavator

Brisbane’s BMI Group operates on both sides of the industry, both building properties in the city as well as managing and recycling waste.

BMI Resource Recovery operates at six sites across Brisbane Metro, taking in everything from construction and demolition (C&D) waste, concrete, bricks and timber to soil, fill and green waste. BMI Group plant manager Aj Ali says the Group achieves 80 per cent recovery out of C&D waste with its two recycling plants.

“We get all the demolition waste and crush the concrete bricks down to make drainage aggregate and road base, which goes back into the market. Also, we do mine and quarry rehabilitations – with three sites we’re currently rehabilitating – and transfer stations,” he says.

With infrastructure projects booming post-COVID-19 and the recent flooding in the area requiring large amounts of waste to be cleared and processed, Ali says the sites are flat out handling the material.

“We are very busy at the moment,” Ali explains. “We were allocated as one of the receivers for the majority of the Brisbane flood waste. Plus, there’s the amount of infrastructure work taking place in the area – the other half of BMI Group is in property development, both commercial and residential.

“We’re always looking at opportunities for growth in Brisbane and greater Brisbane.  Everything’s going really well.”

Tools for the task

Busy at work handling the high volumes of material is a brand new 50-tonne Hyundai HX500L excavator, delivered at the beginning of May by Porter Hire to BMI Group’s Stapylton site, located just off the M1.

This ex-quarry covers resource recovery and landfill as well sorting material for transfer. The plant recycles concrete, asphalt and brick to produce aggregates and road base, alongside producing garden soil from screened topsoil and fill.

The Porter Hire HX500L excavator is being used for cell development (waste-holding units within a landfill) and bulking up earthworks on site. Upgrades on this model include new variable control for high performance, a fuel-efficient Tier 3 engine, a robust frame for enhanced durability, a new low-noise and low-vibration cabin, and improved instrument panel.

Despite only having been at work for a couple of weeks, it’s quickly impressed Ali and his team.

“It’s got great breakout forces, the fuel economy is great, operators love it, stability-wise it’s great and it’s got a great cycle time,” Ali says.

“The biggest thing is the productivity of the machines, which is impressive. Plus, with diesel prices through the roof, the fuel burn has been awesome.”

Alongside the HX500L run two Terex articulated dump trucks from Porter Hire, a TA300 and TA400, which have also proved themselves when it comes to operator comfort, fuel burn and cycle time, he adds.

“The safety side when they’re tipping – the stability – that’s great, and they’re turning loads around pretty quick, which is the key thing. Each truck is doing nearly 1,100 tonnes a day.”

Challenging site

When asked about the conditions the machinery is operating in, Ali says that the weather is the biggest challenge, particularly when maintaining a safe environment while working on earthworks and travelling along slippery roads. He says the traction on the Porter Hire Terex articulated dump trucks is excellent and they handle the bad weather well.

“The road condition changes continuously,” he explains. “Also, because we are digging into an old quarry, the machines are in and out of a pit. But the weather’s the main one – the equipment handles every other challenge we throw at it.”

For the HX500L, this is where the variable power control comes into play, managing the output of the 335hp (250kW) engine with three power modes to adapt to the conditions and work being undertaken. The HX series’ upgraded intelligent power control system also optimises pump control to minimise power loss.

“It all comes down to the breakout force,” he says of the excavator. “We do excavate virgin ground, which is abrasive rock, and the HX500L handles it pretty well. Where the material is tighter, and the excavator can’t get it, we’ll drill and blast it.”

In addition to the HX500L, BMI is also utilising Porter Hire’s Hyundai R380-9 38T excavator and 13-tonne smooth drum roller, as well as various attachments such as compaction wheels.

“Over the period of our long relationship we have supplied BMI Group’s various sites with the full range of equipment, including skid steer loaders, wheeled loaders, twin drum rollers and more, providing full site hire solutions for the variety of task BMI Group is involved in,” Porter Hire Australia national sales manager Paul Kot explains.

Next step

BMI Group has been working with Porter Hire for 10 years and Ali says the relationship has been going very well for himself and his team, with the HX500L being a great addition.

“Seeing the advantages of this 50-tonner, and how well it’s performed, we’ll look at maybe replacing our old 320 Hyundai excavators with the HX series 50-tonne Hyundai – there’s a bright future in that,” he says of what plans are down the line. He highlights the level of service received from Porter Hire as a key reason why BMI Group has worked with the distributor for the past decade.

“Anywhere from the service department to the parts department Porter Hire’s a really a great company to work with,” Ali says.

“They provide a quick response if you’ve had a vehicle breakdown on site and when ordering parts in for us do planned maintenance. They look after us really well.

“It’s been a pleasure dealing with Ben Scowcroft and the team at Porter Hire Brisbane. As well as Brendan in the service department and Joel in the parts department, they are all great to deal with. That’s why I go back – because of those guys.”
