As Komatsu National Business Manager – Construction Amber Rickard explains in this video, the hybrid system harnesses energy that is usually wasted as heat — such as kinetic energy when you’re braking —and reuses it for better fuel efficiency and a reduction in CO2 emissions.
“When the excavator is slewing and braking that energy is regenerated and stored in the capacitor … it’s used again to drive the swing motor,” and also ramp up the engine for hydraulic assistance, Rickard says. “We also have a generator motor that sits between the engine and hydraulic pump. It generates electricity off engine torque and stores that in the capacitor.”
Besides being used in the 35-tonne excavator on display, the hybrid system is also installed on Komatsu’s 20-tonne class HB205-1 and HB215LC-1 models. Click here for more details.
