Iveco’s baby mud-slinger, the Daily 4x4, is set for an update mid-2016. While the rest of the Daily commercial truck range saw an all new platform arrive in Australia last year, the 4x4 model had to wait in line for new sheet metal, running gear and interior.

Final Australian spec hasn’t been nailed down yet but the all-wheel-drive Daily off-roader will still feature the same transfer case and triple diff-lock arrangement as the current offering. The old, slightly bug eyed cab will be history, as will the sequentially turbo-charged, 3-litre Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) donk.

The new 4x4 will use a single turbo 3-litre Euro 6 SCR powerplant, which will maintain the 170 horsepower (127kW) power output of the previous engine.

The use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to achieve Euro 6 level emissions also means no more EGR. The upside of this will be a reduction in mechanical complexity. The downside for some will be the Daily’s requirement for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or Adblue.

The chassis will remain largely unchanged and the Italian-built truck will also retain the same three-speed transfer case found on the current model. A much-needed automatic transmission option isn’t on the equipment list at this stage.

We had a sneak peek at the new model at a recent drive day in Queensland. Threats of bodily harm from Iveco PR prevented me from heading for the hills in the little truck, but we did get to climb inside for a look around.

The new interior has given the truck a much-needed lift visually and the quality of materials used has improved as well. From the outside the Daily has lost the happy-ice-cream-van look of the previous model and now has a tougher, more purposeful look.

The new 4x4 Daily is slated for local release, July 2016 with spec and pricing yet to be confirmed.
