The drill-and-loader combo has been developed by Boart Longyear as a solution for drilling contractors and allows for totally hands-free rod handling with no operator intervention required to trip in, align rods or connect to the top head drive. Boart Longyear says that contractors will have more leeway on the contracts they can bid for thanks to the reduced risk of injury.

“The new Freedom series is aptly named,” Boart Longyear director of product managing and marketing Monika Portman says.

“Because drillers’ safety and productivity are front-of-mind in the design, the combination of the LF160 Drill Rig and the LF262 Freedom Loader provides our customers with important freedoms in drilling, movement and bidding.”

The rig and loader also feature a forward-tilting head design to simplify the rod handling process and a clamping device that maintains constant pressure at any hole depth to reduce the risk of dropping a rod. Boart Longyear says the loader can cycle 6 metre rods in the same amount of time as a manual cycle, so greater safety doesn’t come at a cost to productivity.

The rig and loader have the option of either a Tier 3- or Tier 4 Final-configured diesel engine and can be truck-mounted or fitted with crawlers. A wireline winch located in front of the mast allows the operator to see any wire tangles as soon as they happen.

Remote-control operation further enhances the rig’s safety credentials by allowing operators to work at a safe distance from the moving rods.
