Although the R920 has an operating weight of between 19 and 21 tonnes, the crawler excavator is designed for use on restricted construction sites or urban areas. Powered by a 100kW Tier 4 Final diesel engine, Liebherr says the R920 combines the performance and versatility of a standard crawler excavator with the advantages of a compact-dimension machine.

With a turning radius of just 1.85m, the R920 can work unrestricted on most construction sites and can be easily transported from one to another. An automated hydraulic system with mode selection allows the operator to pre-select engine/hydraulic performance settings that are matched to the application, reducing fuel use and engine wear.

The R920’s undercarriage, based on the Liebherr X design seen on other machines, has a travel speed of 6km/h in high range and a low-end range of 3.7km/h. Customers have a choice of four undercarriage configurations, including one with a dozer blade. Rubber track pads are also available as an optional extra.

The ROPS-certified cab has been designed for operator comfort, with an adjustable air-suspension seat, air conditioning and high-resolution 7-inch colour touchscreen display as standard. A fully retractable windscreen, coupled with a counterweight-mounted rear-view camera, provide the operator with improved visibility. An emergency exit located through the rear cab window is standard also.

Liebherr says it has redesigned the maintenance process on the R920 to increase productivity and machine availability. All daily maintenance check points are grouped together and accessible from ground level. A central lubrication system for all components also simplifies maintenance, as it allows the operator to complete lubrication tasks without leaving the cab.
