The Tonka-inspired Toyota HiLux monster truck is the brainchild of Toyota Australia’s in-house design team. The truck is intended to be a one-off, fully driveable concept car.

The HiLux Tonka project was conceived as the ‘ultimate off-road adventurer’ and aims to showcase the capabilities and passion of Toyota Australia’s product design team. The concept is based on the 4x4 HiLux SR5 double cab and uses its 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.

That’s where the similarities between the two vehicles ends. Toyota intends to modify almost every exterior surface on the HiLux, adding aggressive new bumpers, grille, tailgate, wheel-arches and door mouldings.

The big toy will have all-new underpinnings including custom suspension and larger wheels and tyres. To top it all off, the HiLux will be painted in black-and-yellow Tonka livery, making it instantly recognisable to kids and adults of all ages.

"We expect the extreme style and capability of our re-imagined HiLux will capture the imagination of kids and adults alike," Toyota Australia product design chief Nicolas Hogios says.

"HiLux is such a great canvas, and we really pushed the envelope by marrying our number-one seller with the Tonka brand."

"The end result is so exciting because the HiLux Tonka really delivers the dream of every Australian kid who ever wanted such a truck," Hogios says.

The collaboration is significant as both companies are celebrating milestones in 2017, with Toyota Motor Corporation celebrating 80 years of operation and Tonka celebrating 70 years.
