Liebherr drill control system to use Leica GNSS sensors

Leica Geosystems has entered into an agreement with construction machinery giant Liebherr for the former’s iCON rig solution to be integrated into Liebherr’s LIPOS machine positioning system.

The iCON rig solution is a GNSS-based positioning system that uses an array of Leica sensors for surface drilling and for piling of pre-cast concrete piles. The system is guided in-cab by the operator using the Leica iCP40 control panel.

Leica says it is excited about the iCON rig working as an integrated component of Liebherr’s own drilling and piling positioning system, reflecting the rig’s quality.

“Combining Liebherr on-board sensor information adds a significant extra dimension for our positioning solution for drilling and piling applications,” Leica Geosystems machine control division president Johan Arnberg says.

“We are proud to bring added value for Liebherr customers and an easier and efficient way to manage their data on any drilling and piling construction projects.”

The Leica iCON rig solution will provide the GNSS positioning information to Liebherr’s machine-based control sensors. The combined positioning/movement automation ensures a high-quality finish to drilling jobs.

Using positioning systems such as these eliminates the need for ground stakeout work, and design information or project updates can be delivered directly to the operator in the cab.

“Exact positioning and precise execution of drilling and piling processes are crucial for the success of deep foundation machinery,” Liebherr-Werk Nenzing managing director Holger Streitz says.

“With the integration of components from Leica Geosystems in Liebherr’s LIPOS solution, drilling and piling processes are more transparent and traceable. Thus, quality assurance can be better controlled.”
