The wheel loader cabin of the future

The innovative Genius CAB, a collaboratively designed modular cab that can be fitted to a variety of wheel loaders, has been revealed to the public.

The cab is a product of the Concept CAB Cluster, which was founded in 2014 and includes a wide range of partners from across Germany’s construction equipment industry, as well as academics from the Technische Universitat Dresden (TU Dresden).

The group includes: Hella, Bosch, Hydac, Aurora, Fritzmeier Systems, Grammer, Lumod, Max Bogl, Mekra Lang, Savvy Telematics, SMA Metal Technik and VDBUM.

The group was formed in response to the ever-changing construction equipment landscape where today’s machines, attachments and even construction telematics data need to be compatible with each other to form increasingly complex aggregate tools.

The modular nature of today’s equipment solutions necessitates a whole-of-industry approach to design, the group says.

A machine’s cab is the place where all the interacting parts of the system come together, and the advantages of each individual component will only be realised if an interdisciplinary approach is taken with the cab’s design.

A result of this intense collaboration is the Genius Cab for wheel loaders in the 10-30-tonne range. From the outside, the Genius CAB’s multi-manufacturer styling has been inspired by a polished diamond.

The Genius CAB’s frame is made from specially welded aluminium profiles, which the Cluster says reduces weight by up 30 percent.

Inside the cab, a touchscreen panel is integrated into the armrest of the adjustable suspension seat. All machine functions and parameters controlled by the operator are integrated into the touchscreen, which has been engineered to be readable in all conditions.

In a particularly modern twist, all functions and components are networked through a Controller Area Network (CAN), an internal network that processes incoming and outgoing signals through a central computer, which can upload and download construction data.

The Genius CAB also features individually controlled, high-powered work lights which are designed for use in excavation instead of dedicated mobile lighting systems.
