Rugged tech group Xplore Technologies has announced its Xslate R12 tablet will be getting a performance upgrade with the addition of Intel PCIe solid state drives (SSDs).

Intel PCIe SSDs are more than twice as fast as the previously used Intel M2 SSDs, and Xplore says the upgrade, when combined with the tablet’s Intel Core i7 processor, boosts the Xslate R12’s system performance by up to 48 percent over models using hard-disk drives.

"Xplore is deeply committed to bringing the latest technology and innovation to our rugged mobile customers, and that is demonstrated once again with our new enhancements to the Xslate R12," Xplore ANZ director Brett Gross says.

"Our long-standing technology collaboration with Intel is delivering improved productivity and performance to applications that require significant data storage and/or data processing, especially those used by manufacturers, utilities, first responders and field service organisations."

The beefed up 12.5-inch Xslate R12 rugged tablet is particularly suited to workers who frequently rely on data- and graphics-intensive applications such as those used in 3D CAD design and machine control systems.

The R12 tablet is also useful for users who need to store large, commercially sensitive files locally on the machine for security reasons, rather than storing them on the less-secure cloud. The tablet itself can also be secured via Smart Card activation or a fingerprint reader.

The fully rugged tablet is manufactured to both US military MIL-STD-810G and IP54 standards and its outdoor-viewable display is made from Corning Gorilla Glass.

Other features on the Xslate R12 include hot-swappable batteries for long shifts away from power outlets and pass-through antenna capabilities for WiFi and GPS, as well as a barcode and RF HFID combination reader.
