The new Leica ScanStation P50 allows for 3D laser scanning at distances in excess of 1km.

Leica Geosystems says the newest member of its P-Series 3D terrestrial laser scanner range build on the features of the P40, adding the longer range plus low range noise and survey-grade dual-axis compensation.

It says this increases users’ flexibility to offer services in new markets and scan previously unreachable infrastructure – such as big mine pits, long bridges, dams and skyscrapers – or dangerous sites from a remote and safe position.

The newest P-Series model provides high-quality 3D data and High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging at the extremely fast scan rate of up to1 mio points per second.

The ScanStation P50 is designed for use in tough environmental conditions, such as under extreme temperatures ranging from -20C to 50C and complies with the IP54 rating for dust and water resistance.

The 3D laser scanner data can be processed in Leica’s 3D point cloud software suite, which consists of Leica Cyclone stand-alone software, Leica JetStream, Leica CloudWorx plug-in tools for CAD systems and the cost-free Leica TruView.

"Our customers have requested increased range so that they can capture tall structures and/or far away features without sacrificing the safety of their field crews," Leica Geosystems NAFTA HDS product and applications manager Mike Harvey says.

"During a recent deployment of the Leica P50 in an urban setting, the extended range allowed us to capture more of a city skyline in fewer set-ups.

"Due to the extended range, the additional data made scan registration very easy and much faster," he says.
