Caterpillar has updated the PL61 pipe layer, adding a number of productivity, maintenance and safety features.

The new Cat PL61 pipe layer is powered by a 97kW Tier 4 Final Cat C4.4 ACERT diesel (a Tier 3 version is also available) and has a maximum load capacity of just over 18 tonnes.
Cat says the PL61 now offers a faster steering response when compared to its predecessor, providing more pipe manoeuvrability for the operator. The pipe layer’s fuel system is now more robust and is able to withstand lower quality and fuel and extreme temperatures.
A rear-vision camera with a dedicated display providing clear visibility to the back of the machine has been added to the dash. The new cab also features integrated ROPS as standard, as well as a rear window exit and ‘quick drop release’ function for added safety.
Cat has streamlined maintenance tasks on the PL61, with all grouped service points located at ground level. The PL61 also connects to Cat’s Connect LINK telematics system which provides real-time machine performance and maintenance information.
Cat has also endeavoured to make the PL61 as easy to transport as possible. The pipe layer has a compact transport width of 3240mm and a shipping (dry) weight of just over 17 tonnes.
