Case Construction’s concept design for an electric backhoe loader has won a prestigious industrial design award ahead of its release

The Case Construction ‘Project Zeus’ electric backhoe loader concept won a prestigious industrial design award, commended by judges for its respect for the past and consideration for a sustainable future.

The backhoe won a Good Design Award in the Industrial Category, awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

Judges said the electric loader prototype was unique in the industry, saying they were impressed by how the concept incorporated Case’s design heritage, dating back to 1957, to the sharp design of the new model.

Released early last year as a concept design, the backhoe has now commenced series production with models of the Case 580 EV backhoe to be delivered to overseas clients in early 2021.

The diesel engine is gone, replaced by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that the judges said generated cleaner air and less noise pollution all round.

"It was commended for its innovative lighting/backlighting design elements, rugged yet clean lines and contouring, as well as a modern and intuitive user experience," Case says.

"This zero-emission machine has the same power and performance as its standard diesel equivalent and delivers significantly lower operating costs."

Case added that it had focused on leverage technology to give customers the same performance they would expect from a conventional machine while reaping the benefits of sustainable, clean energy.

"The design is born from combining the essence of Case brand heritage and the message of sustainability creating a clean and simple design inside and out," the company says.

"The lighting design on the hood reflects the idea of an energy bolt and expression for electricity, forming a unique signature lighting.  The exterior is rounded with advanced lighting on the roof and rugged but clean lines on the fenders."

Judges, comprising design professionals, leading industry specialists and design journalists and critics, commended the way the  lines of the hood flowed into the front console, which it described as providing a "minimalistic, easy to understand user experience," with an intuitive colour display.

"The blue backlighting surrounding the Case Eagle hood ornament and charge port symbolize the transition of Case Construction Equipment and its historical backhoe leading a future where sustainability is important to all," they said.

Good Design awards were also won by CNH Industrial agricultural brand Steyr, for the Steyr Konzept Tractor, as well as New Holland for its BigBaler 1290, and the Cursor X Engine Concept from CNH powertrain division FPT Industrial.
