Cat unveils next-gen compact wheel loaders

New engine and cab enhancements added to Cat's next generation wheel loaders

The Cat 908 is one of three new models of wheel loader

The Cat 906, 907 and 908 wheel loaders, which build on the success of the Cat M-Series loaders, feature enhanced hydraulics and structures to boost multifunctionality while also delivering faster roading speeds and drive train performance.

At the heart of the new loader models is the new Cat C2.8 engine, which is specifically designed for Cat- branded machines, and delivers 74 horsepower (55.7kW) of gross power – the same as the previous model, yet with 13 per cent more torque.

The engine meets EU Stage V and US EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards, though alternative emissions packages are also available.

A shift-on-the-go transmission results in a top road speed of 40km/h, while fuel tank capacities have also been improved by 30 per cent for the 906 and 12 per cent for the 907 and 908 models.

Cooling cores can be kept clean when working in dusty environments due to Cat’s new reversing-fan option, which can be activated in-cab via a soft-touch button. An automatic mode is also fitted, which reverses the fan’s direction for 10 seconds every 10 minutes.

Inside the cab, the operator experience is vastly improved with the big change being a new sealed and pressurised cab. Previous design aspects, such as raised floor pedals and two doors, have been kept.

Cab enhancements

A new next-generation control monitor is at the heart of the new cab design, Cat says. The monitor offers a range of real-time machine operating information to allow operators to configure hydrostatic transmission response, auto engine idle shutdown and a utility powertrain mode to better control engine and idle speed.

New in-cab programmable kickouts have been added – a first for loaders of this class size – which feature high-definition rotary sensors mounted to the loader arms to better protect operators from unwanted shocks and vibrations.

Cat says that optimum kickout operation also saves up to 20 per cent of bucket cutting edge life.

Other improvements inside the cab include seat-mounted controls designed to improve operating ergonomics and a multifunctional joystick which controls direction, speed, differential lock, hydraulic flow and proportional auxiliary flow.

Hydraulic improvements

The next-gen loaders feature a new standard pressure-compensated valve for increased multifunctionality with lift and tilt while powering hydromechanical tools.

The valve allows operators to simultaneously control implements and operate hydromechanical attachments.

Optional additions to the loader models include the skid steer couple, which has been modified to improve visibility when setting fork tines. A realignment of the compact wheel loader fork carriage also improved forward visibilities.

On the 908 model, an optional high-light configuration is also available and is suitable for agricultural and industrial waste markets. In conjunction with the reversing fan option, the high-lift configuration improves operating efficiency and reliability.

A range of high-illumination LED light options are also available.
