TAFE NSW offers earthmoving short courses

Short training courses on earthmoving equipment will aim to get local workers job-ready for one of biggest transmission projects in NSW’s history

TAFE NSW Goulburn will deliver three new short courses from May 19, which are designed to prepare local workers on the $4.8 billion HumeLink East Project.

As one of the biggest transmission projects in the state’s history, HumeLink East will deliver 1,600 construction jobs and inject an estimated $6.3 billion into the regional economy.

The three new short courses offered to local workers include:

  • Statement of Attainment in Excavator and Dozer Operations
  • Statement of Attainment in Backhoe and Loader Operations
  • Statement of Attainment in Earthworks 2 (Skid Steer and Excavator).

Once graduated, students from Yass, Crookwell and Goulburn will have opportunities to work as plant operators on the HumeLink East project, which involves the expansion of the existing Bannaby 500kV substation, as well as designing and constructing a new 500kV double circuit transmission line.

In partnership with HumeLink East, TAFE NSW has customised the training to match the real-world demands of the project. Students will gain hands-on experience with a range of commercial earthmoving equipment, while also building their skills in work health and safety and site inspections.

NSW Minister for skills, TAFE and tertiary education Steve Whan says the HumeLink East project is critical to Australia’s renewable energy future.

“The project will provide residents with access to cheaper renewable energy and is essential to helping achieve the Australian and NSW governments’ net zero targets,” Whan says.

“This investment in practical, project-specific training means students won’t just graduate with qualifications, they’ll graduate ready to hit the ground running.”
